Natural Stone Masonry

Stonework Built to Last Generations.

Custom dry-stacked stone walls, veneer, pillars, columns, and natural stone features for Utah homes. Handcrafted masonry that adds permanent character and value — not something you replace in 10 years.

Stone Masonry

Natural stone is the only material that looks better with age.

Concrete block walls and prefab stone panels degrade over time. Natural stone masonry built correctly doesn't. A dry-stacked or mortared stone wall from our crew will still look great in 50 years — because it uses the same materials and techniques that have worked for centuries.

We work with Utah sandstone, fieldstone, quartzite, and a range of other natural materials to create features that fit the landscape rather than sitting on top of it. Every stone placed by hand, fitting tightly with attention to coursing, pattern, and visual balance.

Stone masonry we build.

  • Dry-stacked stone walls — no mortar, natural drainage, timeless look
  • Mortared stone walls — higher stability for taller walls and structural applications
  • Stone veneer — natural stone applied to existing concrete or block structures
  • Columns & pillars — driveway entry pillars, gate posts, porch columns
  • Stone fire pits & fireplaces — built-in fire features with natural stone surrounds
  • Stone steps & borders — natural stone integrated into the landscape
Our Process

How We Build Stone Masonry

01

Design & stone selection

We review your property, discuss the look you want, and select stone species and color that fit your existing landscape and architecture.

02

Foundation & footing prep

For structural walls, we excavate and pour a concrete footing below frost depth. For decorative walls and features, a compacted gravel base is set to specification.

03

Stone sourcing & delivery

Stone is ordered or sourced locally, delivered to site. We sort and stage material before starting so the build flows efficiently.

04

Coursing & construction

Stone placed course by course, sorted by size and fit. We break joints for structural integrity and visual consistency. No random stacking.

05

Cap stones & finish detail

Top course capped with flat, level stones. Any mortar work tooled and brushed for a natural appearance. Surrounding landscape restored.

06

Sealing (optional)

Natural stone can be sealed to resist weathering and staining. We recommend sealing for veneer and mortared work exposed to direct weather.

Why Mountain View

Masonry built with real craft

Handcrafted placement

Every stone is placed by hand, not mechanically stacked. The difference in appearance is significant — random stacking versus intentional coursing.

Built for generations

Natural stone masonry done correctly is essentially permanent. No UV degradation, no color fading, no replacement cycles.

Freeze-thaw resistant

Properly built dry-stacked walls self-drain and flex through Utah's winters without cracking. Mortared work is engineered for the same durability.

Utah-sourced stone available

We can source locally quarried Utah sandstone and fieldstone for an authentic regional look that fits the natural landscape.

Property value impact

Quality stone masonry is a top-tier value add. Buyers recognize and pay for it — it reads as permanent, quality construction.

Fully custom

No two stone projects look the same. Every wall, pillar, and feature we build is unique to the material and the property.

Common Questions

Stone Masonry FAQs

What's the difference between dry-stacked and mortared stone?
Dry-stacked walls use no mortar — stones are fitted tightly and gravity holds them. They drain naturally and flex through freeze-thaw cycles well. Mortared walls use mortar between courses for more rigidity and are better for taller or structural walls. We recommend based on your application and aesthetic preference.
How much does stone masonry cost in Utah?
Stone masonry is one of the more premium landscape investments. A basic stone wall or border runs $60–$120+ per linear foot depending on height, stone type, and complexity. Entry pillars, veneered structures, and built-in fireplaces are priced by scope. We provide firm estimates after a site visit.
What types of stone do you use?
We work with Utah sandstone, quartzite, fieldstone, limestone, and a range of manufactured natural stone veneer products. Stone selection depends on your design vision, budget, and how the feature will be used. We bring samples and discuss options during the estimate.
Does stone masonry require maintenance?
Minimal. Dry-stacked walls may need occasional re-leveling of a shifted stone every decade or so. Mortared work may need joint repointing over time if mortar weathers. Optional sealing extends life and reduces maintenance. Generally, natural stone requires far less ongoing care than wood, composite, or concrete.
Can you add stone veneer to an existing concrete block wall?
Yes — stone veneer is a common upgrade for existing CMU block walls, poured concrete structures, and even outdoor fireplaces. We apply adhesive mortar and natural or thin stone veneer to transform the look without demolishing the existing structure.
How long does stone masonry last?
Indefinitely when built correctly. Some of the stone walls in Utah's historic properties are over 100 years old and still structural. The quality of the foundation prep and craftsmanship determines longevity — not the stone itself.
