Pergolas & Shade Structures

Pergolas Built for Year-Round Use.

Custom pergolas and shade structures across Salt Lake County, engineered for real Utah snow loads. Traditional wood, modern aluminum, or motorized louvered roofs — attached to the home or free-standing on the patio.

Pergola Installation

Turn a 4-month patio into a 9-month outdoor room.

A bare patio in Utah works May through August — after that, it's too hot at noon, too exposed when the afternoon storms roll in, or too bright to actually relax. A pergola fixes all three. Shade in July, rain protection in May and September, and with a louvered roof, usable space deep into October.

Here's the catch most homeowners don't see coming: Utah snow load. We routinely see DIY and big-box pergolas collapse in their second winter because they were built to a generic spec, not to actual Salt Lake County snow loads. Footings too shallow, beams undersized, posts under-anchored. Every pergola we build is engineered for the real load it'll see — that's the difference between a structure that lasts 25 years and one that's firewood by spring.

Material choice comes down to aesthetic and maintenance. Wood gives you warmth, classic exposed beams, and a look that ages well — but expect to re-stain every 3–5 years. Aluminum is zero-rot, zero-stain, contemporary lines, and lasts decades. Louvered systems (Struxure, Equinox, Renson) sit at the top — an adjustable roof that opens for sun and closes rain-tight, often with integrated lighting and screens.

What we build.

  • Traditional wood pergolas — cedar or pressure-treated, stained or sealed, classic exposed beams
  • Modern aluminum pergolas — powder-coated steel/aluminum frames, low maintenance, contemporary lines
  • Louvered + motorized pergolas — adjustable louver roofs (Struxure / Equinox / Renson), open or close to weather
  • Attached pergolas — extending from the home to define an outdoor room
  • Free-standing pergolas — anchored on engineered footings; sits independent of the house
  • Integrated electrical — outlets, ceiling fans, recessed LED, speakers wired during build
Our Process

How We Build a Pergola

Every pergola we install follows the same six-step sequence so the structure is engineered, anchored, and finished correctly the first time.

01

Site walk + design

We meet on-site to take measurements, evaluate sight lines and sun angles, and identify attachment points if the pergola is integrating with the home. Renderings before any work begins.

02

Engineering + materials

Snow-load and wind-load calculations specific to your address. Footing depth set below the Utah frost line (~30 inches). Material spec finalized: cedar, pressure-treated, aluminum, or louvered system.

03

Footings + anchors

Concrete piers poured below frost line so winter heave doesn't crack the structure. Hot-dip galvanized post anchors set in fresh concrete — not surface-bolted afterward.

04

Frame + structure

Beams, rafters, and top runners assembled with precision-cut joinery. Every structural connection bolted, not nailed. Cuts dialed in so joints sit tight without shimming.

05

Finish + electrical

Wood gets stained and sealed; aluminum gets touch-up powder coat where needed. Pre-run wiring connected to fans, recessed LED, outlets, and speakers — no surface conduit added later.

06

Final inspection + walkthrough

Load test where applicable, motor and louver function check (for louvered systems), warranty paperwork handed off, and a maintenance briefing so you know what year-one care looks like.

Why Mountain View

What sets our pergola work apart

Utah snow-load engineered

Calculated for actual Salt Lake County snow loads, not a generic catalog spec. The reason our pergolas don't fail in February.

Precision joinery

Cut once, fit once. No gappy hand-fits, no shims wedged behind beams to hide bad cuts.

Bolted connections

Every structural joint is mechanically fastened — through-bolted or lag-bolted, not just nailed in place.

Pre-wired during build

Electrical for fans, lighting, and outlets gets run inside the framing — not bolted on afterward as ugly surface conduit.

One crew, full build

Same crew handles framing, footings, and finish. No "the framer left, the electrician hasn't shown up yet" dead weeks.

Integrated with patio + lighting

Pergola ties cleanly into existing or new hardscape, lighting, and turf — not bolted onto a yard that wasn't designed for it.

Common Questions

Pergola FAQs

How much does a pergola cost in Utah?
Costs vary with size, material, and complexity. Wood pergolas typically run $8K–$25K, aluminum runs $15K–$40K, and louvered/motorized systems run $30K–$80K+ depending on size, motorization, and integrated features (lighting, screens, heaters). We provide written estimates after an on-site walkthrough.
Wood vs aluminum — which lasts longer in Utah weather?
Aluminum, by a wide margin. Powder-coated aluminum doesn't rot, doesn't need re-staining, and shrugs off freeze-thaw and UV. Wood gives you a warmer, more traditional aesthetic, but expect to re-stain every 3–5 years to keep it looking right and prevent checking. Both can last decades when built correctly — aluminum just needs less from you.
Do I need a permit?
Usually yes — permits are required if the pergola is attached to the home or exceeds a certain footprint, and most Salt Lake County municipalities require an engineered drawing. We pull required permits as part of the project so you're not chasing the city.
How long does installation take?
Wood pergolas typically take 1–2 weeks, aluminum takes 1 week, and louvered systems take 2–3 weeks due to the more complex motor mounts and control wiring. Concrete footings need a cure window in there as well. We give a firm timeline with the estimate.
What about Utah snow load?
Every pergola we build is engineered for actual local snow loads — we don't use generic spec sheets. That means properly sized beams and rafters, footings poured below the ~30-inch Utah frost line, and post anchors rated for the calculated load. This is the single biggest reason "I built it myself" pergolas fail in their second winter.
Can a louvered pergola handle wind + rain?
Yes. The major louvered systems (Struxure, Equinox, Renson) are tested for sustained 100+ mph wind and rated rain-tight when the louvers are closed. Most have integrated gutters in the frame so water runs off cleanly instead of dumping over the edge.
