Outdoor Steps & Stairs

Steps Built for Any Slope.

Natural stone, flagstone, paver, and concrete outdoor steps that are safe, beautiful, and engineered for Utah's freeze-thaw cycle. Hillside yards, front entries, retaining walls — we build stairs that last.

Outdoor Steps & Stair Installation

The right steps turn a hillside into a usable yard.

An eroded dirt path down a slope isn't just ugly — it's a liability. Properly built outdoor steps create safe, defined access between levels, frame garden areas, and become a design feature rather than an afterthought. They also stop erosion and integrate with retaining walls and planted beds.

We engineer the rise-and-run ratio for comfortable walking, set proper base material for stability through freeze-thaw, and match materials to the surrounding hardscape or natural stone aesthetic of your property.

Step types we build.

  • Natural stone steps — boulders or large cut stone for a rugged, organic look
  • Flagstone steps — flat-laid irregular or cut stone with planted gaps or gravel fill
  • Paver steps — matching your existing patio or walkway for a unified look
  • Concrete steps — poured or block with stone veneer options
  • Boulder steps — oversized boulders set into hillsides for dramatic effect
  • Retaining wall integrated steps — stairs built as part of a tiered wall system
Our Process

How We Build Outdoor Steps

01

Grade survey & layout

We measure the slope, calculate the number of steps needed, and lay out a comfortable rise-and-run ratio (typically 6" rise, 12"+ run for outdoor steps).

02

Material selection

We discuss material options — natural stone, flagstone, pavers, or concrete — and how they integrate with existing hardscape or landscape style.

03

Excavation & base prep

Hillside excavated and cut back to proper depth. Compacted gravel base laid for each step to prevent settling and freeze-thaw heave.

04

Step construction

Steps set level, with proper front-to-back pitch for water runoff. Natural stone placed by hand for a stable, natural look.

05

Infill & side treatment

Planted gaps, gravel fill, or soil between and beside steps. Landscape fabric under gravel areas. Side slopes planted or covered to prevent erosion.

06

Lighting integration

Optional step lighting wired in during construction — not bolted on after. Low-voltage LED lights in or beside each tread.

Why Mountain View

Steps that stay level through every winter

Proper rise-run ratio

We calculate comfortable walking dimensions — steps that are too steep or too shallow are both fall hazards. Outdoor steps follow different ergonomics than indoor stairs.

Freeze-thaw stable

Compacted base material under every step prevents the heaving and tilting that makes poorly built steps dangerous in spring.

Drainage built in

Each tread has a slight forward pitch so water runs off the front. No pooling, no ice accumulation on tread surfaces.

Lighting-ready

We plan conduit runs during construction so you can add step lighting now or later without tearing anything up.

Hillside integration

Steps are built as part of the slope, not just dropped onto it. Side plantings and erosion control are part of the project.

Matches your hardscape

We match step materials to your existing patio, walkway, or retaining wall so the whole yard looks designed — not assembled piece by piece.

Common Questions

Outdoor Steps FAQs

How much do outdoor steps cost?
Cost depends on number of steps, material, and complexity. Natural boulder or flagstone steps typically run $400–$900 per step installed. Paver or concrete steps run slightly less. A typical 5-step hillside flight is $2,500–$5,000. We provide firm estimates after measuring your site.
What's the best material for outdoor steps in Utah?
Natural flagstone and boulders are the most durable and look great in Utah landscapes. Pavers match existing patio areas seamlessly. Concrete is the most economical and can be veneered with stone for aesthetics. We recommend based on your existing hardscape and budget.
Do outdoor steps require a permit in Utah?
In most cases, landscape steps under a certain height don't require a permit, but requirements vary by municipality. We advise on this during the estimate process based on your city and project scope.
How do you prevent steps from shifting or tilting in winter?
Proper compacted gravel base under each step — not just setting stone on soil. Soil heaves in freeze-thaw cycles; a 6–8 inch compacted base provides a stable foundation that doesn't move. This is the key difference between a professional install and a DIY project.
Can you add steps to an existing retaining wall?
Yes, and this is a very common project. We can integrate steps into an existing wall system or build new steps alongside a wall during the same project.
Do you install step lighting?
Yes. Low-voltage LED step lights are integrated during construction for the cleanest look. If you want to add lighting to existing steps, we can do that as well — though it's easier during the original build.
