Garden Design & Planting

Gardens Designed to Thrive in Utah.

Custom planting beds, perennial borders, and professional garden design built around Utah's climate. From a simple foundation planting refresh to a full garden installation — we design for color, texture, and year-round interest.

Garden Design & Installation

The right plants in the right place makes all the difference.

A beautiful garden isn't just about picking pretty plants — it's about understanding your soil, sun exposure, water availability, and how plants grow over time. We design gardens where the plants actually thrive, not just survive their first season.

We handle everything from initial soil amendment through final mulching, with plant selections appropriate for Utah's alkaline soil, intense summer sun, and cold winters. The result is a garden that looks intentional, fills in properly over time, and doesn't require constant intervention.

What we design and install.

  • Perennial borders — multi-season color with plants that come back year after year
  • Shrub & foundation planting — structure plants that frame your home and define spaces
  • Ornamental trees — specimen and shade trees selected and properly planted for long-term health
  • Raised garden beds — custom wood or stone raised beds for edible or ornamental gardens
  • Seasonal color rotations — annual and bulb plantings for spring-to-fall color
  • Soil amendment & bed prep — correcting Utah clay and alkaline soil before planting
Our Process

How We Design and Plant Your Garden

01

Design consultation

We walk your property, assess sun exposure and soil, and discuss your style preferences, maintenance tolerance, and budget.

02

Plant selection plan

We create a planting plan with specific species chosen for your site conditions — not just what looks good at the nursery today.

03

Bed preparation

Existing vegetation removed, soil amended with compost, gypsum if needed, and starter fertilizer. Utah clay soil requires intervention — we do it right.

04

Edging & borders

Clean steel or natural stone edging installed to define beds and prevent grass encroachment. Clean lines make the whole garden look sharper.

05

Plant installation

Trees and shrubs placed at proper depth. Perennials spaced for mature size — not overcrowded. Annuals staged for visual impact from day one.

06

Mulch & watering setup

3–4 inch mulch layer to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Drip irrigation run through beds for efficient, targeted watering.

Why Mountain View

Plants selected to thrive in Utah

Soil assessment first

Utah's alkaline, heavy clay soil needs amendment before planting. We address it — not ignore it — so your plants actually perform.

Year-round interest

We design for all four seasons — spring bloomers, summer color, fall foliage, winter structure. Not just a summer garden that disappears in October.

Spaced for mature size

Plants installed at the right spacing for their mature size. They may look sparse the first year — but in three years they'll fill in perfectly instead of overcrowding.

Locally sourced plants

We source from regional nurseries with plants already acclimated to Utah's climate — higher survival rate than big-box plants.

Drip irrigation integrated

Drip emitters run through planting beds for efficient watering that targets roots, not sidewalks and foliage.

Maintenance guide included

We leave you with a plant-specific maintenance guide — when to prune, divide, fertilize, and what to watch for seasonally.

Common Questions

Garden Design FAQs

What plants work best in Utah gardens?
Utah's alkaline soil and hot summers favor plants like Russian sage, catmint, black-eyed Susan, coneflower, daylily, ornamental grasses, lavender, penstemon, and most ornamental shrubs like spirea and potentilla. Avoid plants that need acidic soil (azaleas, rhododendrons) without significant soil amendment.
How much does garden design and installation cost?
A small foundation planting refresh starts around $1,500–$3,500. A full perennial border or backyard garden installation typically runs $4,000–$15,000+ depending on size, plant quantities, soil work, and edging complexity. We provide firm written estimates.
When is the best time to plant in Utah?
Spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are ideal planting windows in Utah. Fall planting lets roots establish before summer heat. We install year-round with proper care, but spring and fall installs have the highest success rate with least irrigation stress.
Do perennials actually come back in Utah winters?
Yes — most hardy perennials survive Utah's cold winters well. We select species rated for USDA zones 5–6, which covers most of the Wasatch Front. The bigger threat is summer heat and dry conditions, which proper soil prep and irrigation address.
Can you do edible gardens?
Yes — we design and build raised bed gardens for vegetables, herbs, and fruit trees. Raised beds solve Utah's heavy clay soil problem by using quality imported soil. We build beds in cedar, composite, or natural stone.
Do you maintain gardens after installation?
Yes. We offer seasonal maintenance programs that cover pruning, dividing, fertilizing, and mulch refresh. A well-maintained garden looks better and better each year rather than getting overgrown.
